This to date is concerned by everyone as a masterpiece created on the celluloid.  The story and the actors capture the situation to perfection. The role played by Nargis who was only 28 when she acted in the movie is considered one of the best and there are many actresses who would give anything to essay the role.  Nargis evolves in the film from a young and shy bride who then as the situation demands turns in to the epitome of strength.  When her husband loses an arm in an accident, he leaves the village as he doesn’t want to live with pity showered on him by others. This leaves Nargis on her own to look after the house and raise her three children.  She loses one of her sons to natural calamity but she shows no sign of weakness. Even at the end when she is forced to kill her own son when he becomes an outlaw and kidnaps a girl. The last scene has her with Sunil Dutt, her son dying in her arms.

This movie is known for Nargis who carried the film on her shoulders and left an ever lasting impression in the minds of the viewers.
