Though established much later than the above companies, there’re a number of little known Indian companies which are providing steady service for decades now whose names deserve a place in the list.

Nilgiris

Established In: 1905

Muthuswamy Mudaliar’s official duty involved carrying mails from Mettupalyam to Ooty and Coonoor.  In these trips, he was often requested to carry dairy products to Ooty and Coonoor. As the requests grew in number, he sensed a business opportunity. He bought the butter business from an English man and named it ‘Nilgiris Diary Farm Limited’ in 1905. Nilgiris is currently south India’s leading retail chain.

Bennett Coleman and Co.

Established In: 1838

Bennett Coleman and Co., the publisher of the Times of India and Economic Times is the largest player in the media sector in India. They have presence in the broadcasting, publishing, films and cable TV business with the revenue exceeding $1.5billion. But the beginning was quite humble. Raobahadur Narayan Dinanath Velkar, a reformist started a newspaper named ‘The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce’ as a bi-weekly. The 1st edition was published in 3rd November 1838. It took 12 years to become a daily newspaper.
