William Colgate was born and brought up in Kent, England. During his initial days, he earned his living by farming. His interest towards politics dragged him so deep in the ‘American War of Independence’ that he had to leave his farms in Kent. In 1978, he came to the U.S. and started learning the trade of manufacturing soap.

William’s hard work and strong observing capability helped him to become one of the best soap manufactures of those days. He opened his own shop in 1806 and named it as ‘William Colgate & Company’ which later on became popular worldwide and also one of the most common household names in the world.

8. Dupont

Country of Origin: France

Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours, also known as E.I. du Pont was born in 1771 in Paris, France. Their family migrated to the U.S. in the year 1799. He, along with his father and some other members of the family, arrived on the Rhodes Island on January 1, 1980.

During his teenage, he used to study explosive production and its techniques and also worked at France’s central powder agency.

Upon arrival in the U.S., DuPont found the poor quality of the American gunpowder and also offered to produce gunpowder of better quality. Soon, he founded his own company and started supplying gunpowder to the U.S. Army.
