Aiming to afford temporary shelter for migrants and homeless people, the government determined to launch a rental housing scheme in big cities like New Delhi.

Senior Urban development Ministry official said “ To advance rental housing on a large pace, we planned to launch a major initiative - rental housing scheme for which Rs 6000 crore is proposed as an investment, the government will provide an accommodation for migrants who drove to big cities for livelihood.

Migrants who are coming to big cities for employment/living often face problems in finding suitable accommodation as they were low income group households, the official added.

As per the government plan, the rental housing scheme is anticipated to launch firstly in the national Capital Delhi, later it will be replicated in other cities.

The official said, through the scheme the government will provide an accommodation for home-less people and migrants for short periods till they obtain their own homes.

According to estimates in 2012, the housing shortage is at nearly 18.78 million and 95 percent of the shortage is in the low income category.

To replace slums with low cost houses and to facilitate to own the houses in urban areas for low income groups, slum dwellers and economically weaker section individuals, The NDA government took an initiative and announced a new urban housing scheme which is named as Sardar Patel National Urban Housing Mission. This housing scheme ensures million houses by the year 2022.

The Sardar Patel Housing Scheme is a part of National Democratic Alliance government’s goal to reach PM Narendra Modi’s target “Housing for all by 2022”.  The endeavor of this scheme is to build more than 10 crore houses for all in the next eight years including slum dwellers, the senior official added.

The NDA government wishes that the “Housing for all by 2022” scheme will spur economic growth as it offers huge investment opportunities.

An estimated cost of Rs 22.50 Lakh crore is required to provide housing in urban areas alone and to achieve construction targets, we are keen to advance the private enterprises in a big way, official said.
