I play the role of department head and leader of Test CoE (Center of Excellence) in Huawei Technologies R&D, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider with a vision to enrich life through communication in Bangalore.

Ensuring Growth
In my case, I have adopted the following to grow myself as a leader;
• Understand the organization I work with and their customers, pain points and priorities
• Familiarize the organisation’s business plan based on the capacity I work
• Commit and deliver to business
• Continuously assessing my self for the competencies required, identifying gaps and developing to close gaps
• Constant touch with industry through networking, conferences/forums and several collaboration activities

Leadership skills
I strongly believe techno managerial leadership skills are essential. These will help to meet the customer requirements and effectively accomplish the organization needs.

Technical Skills: Domain knowledge, Strong understanding about Customer/market Requirements, systems/solution’s architecture and design, development/test, product/applications roadmap.

Management Skills: product/program/project/people/client management skills. Every customer need some thing from the role played/exists in a company. The strategies, tactical tasks which need to be converted as a value to customers are critical. Any skills that fall in to these scopes are known as management skills. It ranges from basic commonsense, ability to think, connect with people, using appropriate tools, influencing, customer centric attitude and building trust.
Doing things right
Actually connecting the dots first then the right dots!
In this fast moving world, every thing is urgent and can not afford to make mistakes. But unfortunately on other hand a baby can not be produced in a quarter. So, my point is keep your sensors/KPIs every where to check the pulse/progress. Based on the context and situation the decision can be made. Mistake happens when the work is in progress. This it self is a good news. But prevention of mistake is based on experience, tools/techniques, judgment capabilities. A good supervisor is a good mentor as well!
Handling Office disputes
Manager is looked upon as company for their subordinates/associates. Employees join because of company, but mostly leave due to their managers. The company is a framework, but the day to day job is defined by their managers. Here any error by manager or mis-understanding by the employee leads to dis-satisfaction. In my opinion if we take care of employees within the framework along with trust and relationship any issue can be resolved. One to One, Skip level meeting, HR Open forums, surveys are some of the tools that helps grievances to get notified/addressed.
Advice to upcoming leaders
My sincere advice to those who would like to pursue management leadership level are;
• Ask yourself how much is the satisfaction level from your customers based on the contributions you made, what are their feedbacks for further improvements. This way one can establish for a sustainable growth for self/org and finally to customers
• It is true that after joining corporate world, the most recent competencies are based on on-the job and recent assignments against those from school/university. The point is update with new trends and technologies to perform the job better. What we learnt in past may not necessarily same/relevant for now. In management nothing is correct or wrong. It is on case to case basis and principle centric.

Taking Important career decision
I have > 20 Years of industry experience primarily in Software Testing. My focused product testing experience is mostly from fortune 100 MNC R&D Centers at Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore. This includes Motorola, Nortel Networks ODC (BPL), Siemens Communication Software, Ness Technologies, Intel Technology, HP R&D and Huawei R&D (present). Thus it has been a diversified work experience for me with Global Corporate Culture, Multi-domain and locations like USA, Costa Rica, Canada, Israel, Germany, Austria, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore and India.

My prospective towards India Technological development
There are many aspects here. The service industry in IT had dominance earlier and helped IT employment and services growth in India. But then why products are not key focus, this needs lots of discussion. In general the entrepreneurship in India and its required eco system is yet to grow big. Also innovation (patent), University research and fund availability from corporate, support system from government needs to improve significantly. New trend is China and Korea are demonstrating their leadership in product engineering space.

It is a strategic area. Many companies are focusing on it already and investing on their R&D centes in India (for their global market). Recent good news for us is startup companies momentum. It is picking up now and many freshers/young engineers are very ambitious and there are lots many things are happening (example: flipkart.com, redbus.com). Another point is the willingness of parents to support for entrepreneurship, which I think is also improving against recommending their children to work for salary in established companies.
Inspired by
My parents. Because, my father was a teacher in a government school in a small village. My mom was a home maker. I learnt the simplicity from them and how to face the world with available resources. There was no computer, internet and big malls. But I learnt what these can not provide from my upbringing by them. Today I see these as big challenge from my kids, for whom every thing is different and influenced with modern world/life style. But my belief is never forget the human basics (example: being yourself/simple!) irrespective of what you are today.

Family background
I am married with Umamaheswari a home maker. I have two sons Santosh V and Ritesh who are studying their 6th and 4th standard in DPS respectively.
