Important lesson learned
Some of the lessons I’ve learned from life are:
1) Take risks. The more risks you take, the more successful you will be. But weigh carefully the gains and losses.
2) Take the first step towards your goal; you will automatically find out what the next steps. If you know within yourself that you are doing the right thing, then don't think about it too much.
4) Your achievements will change people’s perceptions of you, so don't care too much about criticism.
5) Always look for new things to do and learn; this will keep you refreshed.
Degree that I recommend
As mentioned earlier, I think certifications are a good way to learn new skills in time bound manner. But at the same time, it should be done in the right spirit. It should not be used to prove your achievements, but to really gain the knowledge.
At the end, nothing can beat hands-on work. It will provide you the necessary confidence.
Brief description about me
I am basically a mechanical engineer by education. Life is quite dramatic for me. While working for a government organization, I was introduced to computers and it changed my life.
Currently I am working for CGI – a global IT services MNC as a Senior Technologist.
I always like to design solutions for complex business/technical problems faced by the clients.
Apart from delivering quality solutions to clients, I spend time on training, coaching and mentoring architects to pursue the technology path.
My achievements
When I look back in life, sometimes I am surprised to think where I had started my journey.
From working in a routine government job to working on cutting edge technologies with global clients successfully, is a big journey.
The hard work I have done to make this radical shift is a matter of joy for me.
I am also proud that I am still a techie by heart.
Though I traveled a lot across the globe during the last few years, I also kept focus on my kids and family.
My family background
I have a caring wife who takes care of my personal responsibilities and personal life.
My mother stays with us; which I think is a blessing for me.
I have a daughter, who is pursuing MBA after engineering and a son, who has appeared for 12th standard examination this year.
My sister works for LIC in Maharashtra and I have a brother, who is settled in USA.
Important decision
I learned from life that the more risks you take, the more successful you will be. When I look back, I am surprised to note that the decisions which I took momentarily based on my gut instinct paid off more than carefully thought through decisions.
Leaving a comfortable and secure government job was quite a difficult decision, but it was the best decision of my life.
Moving to unknown city like Bangalore, far from my comfort zone, was another good decision.
Then purchasing an apartment in Bangalore, when it was not very common, was also a good decision, because it gave me stability.
As told earlier, most of these decisions were based on my inner feeling than carefully thought process.
I strongly believe that if you have a strong will-power to do something and if you take first step quickly, you will automatically get future directions.
I also think that moving back to India giving more importance to family in 2008, after 3 years in US, was a good decision.
Couple of years from now
I really want to work as a CTO or Technical Authority who can participate in business decisions. But unfortunately in India, there are very few opportunities for people who want to stay with technical career pathway.
In India, most people, despite being technically bright people, choose a managerial career path after some experience due to attractive opportunities offered by the managerial roles.
But we, in turn, lose a bright technology person, who can add lot of value.
I strongly believe that we need more technology people to move up in the value chain.
Thoughts on Education system of our country
I strongly believe our education system is the difference between USA and India. We need to encourage children to be more creative, open and practical.
We should stop relying on marks to measure someone's ability.
It is no surprise that in US, several college dropouts become the most successful people in industry, and college students have brilliant ideas that changed the world.
Our education system should also discourage "copy and paste" type of learning.
Influenced by
My mother, of course. Her positive attitude, despite all odds and her fighting spirit has taught me a lot.
The next person, who influenced my life is my brother.
Though he is younger than me, he encouraged and helped me to learn computers and changed my career path.
I am still amazed by his ability to focus on important things and long term goals.
My wife is the next person who influenced my life, positively.
After she entered in my life, my life is always happy and pleasant.
My home is the place, where I get rejuvenated.
I also read lot of biographies and always fascinated by people, who have reached to great heights, by fighting with odds.
Qualities needed to become a successful leader
Honesty and sincerity are the prime qualities of a successful leader.
Always give due credit to the right person and never ever try to take credit of someone's hard work.
Don't copy or steal someone's idea, instead try to find your own ideas and pursue it.
Always appreciate and recognize good work.
Don't be a follower, but try to become a leader.
You can do this, only by thinking differently and working on different ideas. Also don't work in isolation, but involve the right people in your endeavor.
My strongest skill
Apart from being technically very strong in my core skill area, I also keep tab on latest and new technologies; hence I can always add value to any project or account.
I am also a good team player, so always work with a team.
I am very committed to the tasks and generally keep my promises.
Initiative to develop a country
We can do many things, if we can move out of our comfort zone. I really felt sad when I read that a farmer had committed suicide for a small amount of money, which we spend easily in one party.
We should think about less fortunate people and try to help them and come out of their problems.
Once I was shopping in a big super market and a man was standing in front of me in the line. When he reached to billing counter, he checked about prices of the goods he purchased and then left the counter, because he didn't have sufficient money. When I reached the billing counter, I saw it was just few cookies hardly amounting to 25 rupees.
I was very moved after that incident thinking there are people who can't even afford biscuits for their kids.
I think unless we can balance growth and unless everyone is part of the development, we can't become a developed country.
My role model
I am inspired by founders of great companies like HP, CISCO, Oracle and my company CGI.
I salute their vision and dedication.
I also respect a lot to the people who dreamed about Google, Facebook, Yahoo and LinkedIn, which has changed the world.
More about myself
One of my relatives told me once, that Science is necessary to live life happily and it is very essential. But it is the arts which makes your life beautiful and meaningful.
I always remember this sentence.
Life is too short, so pursue your hobbies, spend time on things which you like from heart like painting, music, writing, sports etc.
Think about less fortunate people and always try to help them.
Thank God for what you have and be happy.
Ensuring success
I always keep tabs on what is happening in the outside world instead of being glued to my regular work. I participate in various events, tech talks and am part of many technology groups. I’ve found that certifications are very good way to learn a new skills and technologies. It forces you to focus and learn something within a time bound manner.
Apart from this, I know the value of good health; so I spend some time in morning every day doing Pranayama and Yoga.
