Bangalore: Children below the age of 14 need not go to the American embassy or consulate to apply for U.S. visa, said Nicholas J Manring, chief of consular services, American consulate, Chennai, reports The Times of India.

"We'd like children below 14 years to stay in schools," said Nicolas who was speaking at the kanara Chamber of Commerce, on U.S. visas. He added that the re-election of Obama won’t result in any change in the US visa laws, especially H1B visas. "These laws are not determined by the US President, but more by the Congress and the Senate," he said.

The consulate in Chennai handles around 25 percent of all H1B visas the world over, said Nicholas. "In the past 12 months, we processed around 2.36 lakh applications in Chennai and there was about 1.4 percent increase in H1B (business) visas compared to the same period before that."

Students seeking U.S. visas have been increasing recently, he added, without revealing the exact number. "A student's education plan is important to us while considering the application for studies in the US," he said.
