Bangalore: San Francisco-based news-sharing platform Reddit has apologized to the family of Sunil Tripathi, for serving as a platform for carrying on discussions related to Boston bombing and Sunil’s role in it.

"Though started with noble intentions, some of the activity on Reddit fueled online witch hunts and dangerous speculation which spiraled into very negative consequences for innocent parties," Reddit general manager Erik Martin said in a blog post yesterday, as reported by Agence France-Presse.

"We all need to look at what happened and make sure that in the future we do everything we can to help, and not hinder, crisis situations."

The website accompanied with some of its users and moderators have apologized to Tripathi’s family for wrongly implicating him as the second suspect in Boston bombing. 22-year-old Indian-American student Sunil Tripathi has been reported missing since March 16 and he was first suggested as a suspect for Monday's Boston Marathon bombings on Reddit. Later on the news spread on to Twitter and many other prominent media publications.

"The Reddit staff and the millions of people on Reddit around the world deeply regret that this happened," Martin said.

Even though the allegation against Tripathi has been cleared and Reddit has apologized for the false implications against him, his missing still continues to be a mystery.
