NEW DELHI: With more and more Indian students opting for the United States as their study destination, Americans diplomats today said this not only helps the students in their personality development but also aids in fostering ties between the two countries.

"We are happy that students have opted for America as their destination for foreign education. While studying in America, you will get an opportunity to give new dimensions to your personality. All sports activities are available there and one can even play ice hockey.

"You will not only study in international institutions but you will also be able to establish yourself as a global citizen," Michael Pelletier, acting US Ambassador to India, said.

He was speaking on the eve of Students Visa Day here. To encourage students, Pelletier and Counsel General Cynthia Halle also handed over visa to two students.

Embassy officials said until now over 1 lakh Indian students are in the process of applying in US educational institutes. Since October 2013 a record number of students have applied for the American visa. This year, there has been a 40 per cent rise in issuing visa as compared to last year.
