Teens Turn To Twitter As Facebook Shows 'Too Much Drama': Poll

Bangalore: A recent study on online media that was published this week, states that teenagers are resorting to Twitter these days as they find ‘too much drama’ and adults on Facebook. The study also said that teens are sharing too much information about themselves even when they try to protect their online reputation.

As told to researchers from teenagers, there were too many adults on Facebook and too much of teenage anxiety and silly details such as what did a friend have for dinner, reported AP.

“The key is that there are fewer adults, fewer parents and just simply less complexity and less drama,” says Pew Research Center’s study author, Amanda Lenhart. “They still have their Facebook profiles, but they spend less time on them and move to places like Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr”, she adds.

Based on the polls conducted, 94 percent of teenagers who use social media have a Facebook profile which is less as compared to the previous years. Around 26 percent of teenagers are on Twitter, which is more than double as compared to the previous years.

On the other hand what concerned parents more were that teens had their tweets made public, meaning that anyone on Twitter could see what they wrote and published. Out of that only one quarter of the teens said that their tweets were private while only 12 percent never knew whether their tweets can be made public or private.

The poll also stated that teens are taking further steps to protect their reputation and avoid information they don’t want to access. For instance, about 60 percent of teen social media users said that they deleted or edited comments from others on their profile or account.

This overall study had conducted a survey with 802 parents and their 802 teens. The poll took place between July 26 and September 30, 2012 using landline and Cellphones.
