Report: 8 In 10 Smartphones Sold Globally Are Android

Bangalore: Android is truly emerging to be the supreme power in Smartphone as well as Tablet market, pushing down iPhones and other devices running a different OS. According to a study conducted by Strategy Analytics, the Google owned OS constituted 80 percent of the total handsets sold in second quarter of 2013, followed by Apple’s iPhone at a mere 14 percent.

The total handset sales in Q2 this year accounted to 182.7 million, out of which the Microsoft owned Windows 8 devices merely marked a 4 percent. According to the research firm, the sales figures witnessed a huge boost from the same quarter last year and Android’s dominance was solidified by its ability to target various price tiers. The OS also came out a winner in the growing Tablet market by selling 34.6 million Android-devices compared to 14.6 million iPads.

The report will surely send tremor waves to the Cupertino tech giant, as it is apparently readying a cheap version of iPhone to capture the markets of developing countries. Meanwhile, rumors about iPhone 6, the next iPhone debuting against Android flagships are also high.
