Narayana Murthy To Launch E-commerce Portal With Amazon


BANGALORE: Infosys Co-founder NR Narayana Murthy is all set to enter e-commerce space by joining hands with Amazon to launch a project in India. This step of his can be a crucial revolution in the Indian e-commerce industry, reports Nisha Poddar of TNN.

After Murthy has stepped down as the Executive Chairman of Infosys, this will be his first and a very big venture in the e-commerce scenario.  He will invest through his own private investment firm Catamaran based in Bangalore and London.

Arjun Ramegowda Narayanswamy, Head of Catamaran Venture revealed that they will offer services to help offline sellers and SBMs (Server Message Block) in India to get online. It will assist Amazon to increase customers throughout the country. Since FDI is not allowed in e-commerce in India, Amazon and Catamaran both have consulted the apex legal advisors for a realistic partnership plan so that the new project does not fall under the limitations imposed by the government of India.

According to the sources, Catamaran will have 51 per cent of stake in the project. The entity will be called an Indian company.

Before Narayana Murthy many bigwigs have invested in e-commerce like AB Kinnevik of Sweden has invested 90 million dollar in venture with Quicker India Pvt. Ltd.  this year. In 2012 Aziz Premli founder of Wipro has invested 50 million dollar in venture with Myntra. Still India lags behind China and U.S. in e-commerce.
