NSA Masquerade As Facebook To Spread Malware

BANGALORE: The National Security Agency (NSA) has apparently tried to infect millions of computers and networks with malware using an automated system. The information leaked out from the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden carries some details regarding TURBINE program, which the NSA has used to infect the millions of computers with malware ‘implants’, as reported by firstlook.org.

This groundbreaking surveillance technology enables the agency to make a forced entry into the targeted device and to drain off the data from them.  In some cases the agency has disguised itself as fake Facebook server, to perform malicious act on computers and extract files from the hard drive. This made the Facebook users to have a forceful visit to the page which exactly looks like official Facebook page.

NSA’s targeting of Facebook is apparently a response to the failure of other malware insertion techniques. The former technique was using spam emails that trick users into clicking a malicious link.

The NSA used to send out spam mails enclosed with malware that can be tailored to secretly record acoustic from a system microphone and take pictures using its webcam. The hacked systems also have given permission to the NSA for initiating the cyber attacks by corrupting and distracting the file downloads or denying access to visit websites.

Initially the program was tested on around a dozen computers before it was used widely, as per the report. The program was commenced to hack around 100 to 150 targeted computers. However, the malware could attack millions of computers throughout the world.
