Half Of Indian Internet Users Will Access Web Only Through Mobiles By 2015

Bangalore: More than half of the internet users in India will access web only using mobile phones by 2015, according to the new survey.

The survey based on 4500 respondents done by Boston Consulting Group’s Center and Customer Insight, an international strategy and general management consulting firm, brought this prediction to light. The web access through mobiles is already widespread in India, and it is the reason why companies like Facebook are concentrating more on its marketing strategy on mobiles.

“In tier 4 areas, for example, the penetration of mobile Internet usage is 15 percent, not so different from the 20 percent mobile-usage penetration in metro areas. For PC- and laptop-based Internet usage, penetration is only 9 percent in tier 4 areas, versus 25 percent in metros,” the survey said.

According to BCG, about 60 percent of internet users already lie outside the largest cities as measured by total number of internet hours users spend on browsing. And it is tier 4 cities that drive the growth in number of net users on mobile.

The report projected about four times growth in internet hours by 2015, with nearly 40 percent of demand coming from tier 4 cities and rural areas. And 22 percent demand coming from 1, 2 and 3 tier cities; and 38 percent from metros.
