Shocking report: Indian Women-led Startups finding bias in Funding

Women founders in India have bumped into an evident discrimination in funding on their businesses when compared to male equivalents. As per the report from a universal diversity-oriented network Encubay, out of 799 deals happened between June 2023 & February 2024, only 163 deals departed to startups with women founders. Out of $6646 million total funding, women-centric ventures lifted $300 million, which covers just 4.5 percent of total funding.

In January 2024, startups with least one female secured $74 million funding. Amongst the prominent investors that have lend funds for women-established startups are She Capital, Fireside Ventures, Titan Capital, Better Capital, All In Capital, Google for startups, Mumbai Angels and  Lightbox.

In addition to this Women-founded Venture Capital funds including Seema Chaturvedi-led AWE Funds, Anisha Singh-led She Capital, Deeksha Ahuja-led Encubay Angel Network and Ankita Vashistha-led Arise StrongHer Ventures have majorly nurtured the women entrepreneurs & their startups in India.

In accordance with the Encubay’s report, Out of 146 countries, India positions 135th place in gender parity and lesser than 3 percent of the venture capital fund goes to the female startups in the country.

Raising her voice towards the women-led ventures, Deeksha Ahuja, Founder, Encubay states, "There is a significant increase in the number of female-led and co-led companies looking to raise capital and are building disruptive, investment-able, and impact-focused businesses. Hence it’s now important to ensure that an equitable amount of funding goes to these startups; money is mandatory for ventures to grow”.
