Is Pune the Next Silicon Valley For Indian Startups?

“Initially, Pune was identified as Oxford of the East and Detroit of the East, having a large number of quality educational institutes and automobile companies. Now, it is a destination for start-ups. As our research observed that Pune has one of the most cohesive start- ups ecosystems that work very closely with each other with a single agenda of making Pune the best start-up destination,” said an enthusiastic CEO of one of the Startups.

Unlike the other cities which are excellent destinations to specific fields like IT or manufacturing, Pune has a good mix of startups. It has a culmination of verticals like enterprise, infrastructure, biotech, clean-tech and more.

Many experts and officials of Pune claim that the start-ups here have a huge potential and opportunity in creating business. Here the startups target the pickaxe segments which are vital for growth and development. This raises a question in everyone’s head, “Is Pune the next Siliconvalley of India?” Situated close to the India’s economic capital, Pune can be counted as a vibrant city with strategic location.

The survey found that almost 50 percent of the start-ups are from the mobile, web or cloud segment. A survey conducted by Zinnov, for Maturity Benchmarking in 2013, proved that Pune’s start-ups are doing better than the Bangalore’s start-ups, though not as popular as Bangalore. 80 pct of the start-ups are experienced, which is why they are already generating revenue with an average of 10-30 millions.
