Food Start Ups, The New Business Trend Hits India

According to Sanjeev Bikchandani, co-founder of Info Edge and Zomato's largest shareholder, "Zomato has become the most-recognized name in the industry in India and I don't see any serious threats from the competition currently,"

TimesCity, part of Times Internet, acquired DineOut, a table booking website. It allows users to book a table using Twitter. This strategy has helped TimesCity pull ahead of rivals such as Buzzintown and Burrp! It is even ahead of Zomato in terms of Indian traffic.

Rohit Chadda, co-founder and managing director of Foodpanda said, "By the end of this calendar, we should be working with 25,000-30,000 restaurants here."

K Ganesh, serial entrepreneur and investor, says, “The time for a browser-based internet business has gone. The smart businesses will be mobile-first or mobile-only ventures."

Shaival Chandra, cofounder of Hopping Chef said, “We are present in Mumbai only for now, but will launch in Bengaluru in April and Delhi in May."

In the past seven years of its existence, Zomato has warded off several rivals (like Burrp! or Ask Laila) to stay ahead of the chasing pack. "It's been a bit of both good luck and timing... We had a slow start but with the right team in place we've broken into a sprint and have no intention of slowing down."

The largest internet only restaurant in Sarjapur, FreshMenu, bustles with action without waiters found marking time impatiently to take food out to hungry customers. They have plans to open more kitchens across Bengaluru and eventually nationwide.
