The company calls the Wagon R its blue-eyed boy, and not without a reason. From years the Wagon R has been on the list of top five selling cars in India and part of the company’s bread-and-butter along with the Alto.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R in the latest battle for sales managed to outdo the previous month’s top two performers, the Swift and the Dzire, to take second place. The popular 4 seater family car clocked 17,119 units in June, gaining two places compared to May’s sales figure of 11,757 units.

Maruti Suzuki first launched the Swift DZire in 2008, with the current gen model arriving in 2012. The car replaced the Esteem in the company’s lineup and its massive reach in smaller cities and towns has  sky-rocketed its popularity, even after the arrival of the Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent.

By taking a big hit in the market slowdown, India’s most popular compact sedan dropped from its number 1 to number 3rd position in June as the car sales stood at 15,990 units against 18,953 units in May. Sighting this figure the company has planned for a facelift shortly and it is set to have yet another brand new competitor in its segment the Tata Zest.
