North East Monsoon Getaway

Jorhat

A district headquarter in the state of Assam, Jorhat is not a tourist destination, but is a base to explore the diverse natural beauty upper Assam has to offer. This part of Assam is widely popular for its enormous tea plantations and Kaziranga National Park that is home to world’s largest one-horned rhinoceros population. The NH-37 that connects Jorhat with Guwahati passes right through Kaziranaga where a slow drive and keen eyes are enough to see this nearly extinct species in its natural habitat; and a sheer bad luck is to blame if you don’t spot even one.

If an opportunity to stay in a tea estate presents itself, grab it at once. Colonial era bungalows, the faint smell of tea in the air and acres of lush green tea plantations in every direction will take you to a different world, especially in the mornings. There are a few tourist operators that facilitate stays in tea estates, while the best option is to have friends native to, or who own, tea estates.
