North East Monsoon Getaway

Majuli

Majuli is located near Jorhat, but needs a separate description for itself. Deemed to be the biggest river island in the world, its size has been significantly diminished by the mighty Brahmaputra, which ironically is the only male river in India by its name. Majuli is also the Mecca of Assamese culture. lonelyplanet states, “For a place continually ravaged by the primal forces of nature, Majuli flaunts unparalleled scenic beauty. The island is a relaxed, shimmering mat of glowing rice fields and water meadows bursting with hyacinth blossoms.”

Once in Majuli take a look at the horizon, with vast expanse of water in every direction it looks more of an ocean than a river. Majuli is also popular among people keen at studying the neo-Vaishnavite philosophies. The place oozes an otherworldly aura given its secluded geographical location. Wake up early to witness the sun emerging from the river as it paints the water yellow, and wait for the evening to witness the sun  plunge back into the river as it paints the water in hues of red and orange. Pack your bags quickly because this nature’s marvel is predicted to vanish due to erosion within a couple of decades.
