From Dark stories to a Bright present: Here is the real life "Wordsmith"

BENGALURU: It was yet another day at Indiranagar, Bengaluru. The rain was pouring down, coffee cups were getting emptied at the coffee shops, street peddlers were trying to sell their stuff, and shopkeepers were trying to make profit by giving ‘candies’ instead of change. But suddenly there was a transformation in the place’s ambience. Visionary wind began flowing! Rain was suddenly pouring with echoes of changing times! Soon, Indiranagar witnessed someone who has taken the Bollywood with a storm, who has redefined the idea of film-making, who has made the students believe that ‘keh ke loonga’ is the best term to be used in the case of revenge! Yes, The Humming Tree, Indiranagar in collaboration with Signature Startup mentorship program was host to the packed event wherein visionary director Anurag Kashyap shared his life experiences in Bollywood. As the real-life ‘Phantom’ entered the well lit stage, someone from the crowd roared, “Dada ka, Bhai ka, Baap ka, sabka badla lega le tera Faizal”. That’s how much he is followed. Even minute dialogues of his creations are remembered. Anurag shared his life experiences in Bollywood as he answered to interviewer cum VJ Cyrus Sahukar. Here are some noteworthy insights that Kashyap shared to a curious yet cheering audience in the ambience of this pub which was followed by a live concert.

A ‘Dark’ Childhood

Kashyap recalled an instance from his childhood where a story he once wrote for school magazine appeared ‘too dark’ for his teacher which eventually led to a meeting with his parents. Since then he would simply write stuffs for himself during school days. He realized movies were his destiny when he saw ‘Bicycle Thieves’. “There was just so much I could relate to the movie with my life” he recalled. Kashyap’s entry in to the movies began as he gradually began ghost writing scripts for movies, and serials. He was apparently a fast writer which came as ‘valuable talent’ for those who employed him. He recalled his early day associations with Ram Gopal Varma who had played a key role in leveraging Kashyap’s stance in the industry.

Not doing different things, doing things differently!

The first directorial debut of Anurag Kashyap was a music video. He prides in saying that he had ‘full freedom’ while making it which for a director is worth its value in gold. When asked about how he handles difference in opinions on the set, Kashyap does not want actors to know beforehand the location of camera and prefers to work with the ‘not so experienced’ crew. As a matter of fact, that is a trait visible in most of his films for he does not bank upon established superstars and is always ready for creative experiments. “It is important to know actors inside out and turn weakness to advantage. The crew should feel beneficial to the project and not like they have been used” he adviced.
