From Dark stories to a Bright present: Here is the real life "Wordsmith"

Destiny is where the will is!

Kashyap prefers to make movies using whatever resources are available. “Don’t sit and complain, go and do it” he said. The movie ‘Last Train to MahaKali’ apparently had to be shot bypassing permission from authorities in many instances. Being constrained by budget, the movie No Smoking had the crew clean out a filthy room blotched with pigeon excreta. “We moved 26 buckets of pigeon shit a day’” he said. Gulaal, another one of Kashyap’s flicks was shot over the period of eight years primarily because he needed the light setting that occurs during Diwali season which were otherwise hard to achieve with allotted budget. He had Piyush Mishra do music for the movie for free in exchange of a role in the film.

Give it for free, and no one is threatened!

Kashyap has a proven strategy for expanding funding opportunities; his mantra is ‘give it away for free’. He had given the movie ‘The girl in Yellow Boots’ for worldwide distribution with zero royalty. It came to Kashyap’s benefit once the film gained recognition and it turned out that half of the finances for the next movies ‘Lunch Box’ and ‘Masaan’ came from abroad.

Advice to aspiring film makers

“Don’t depend on anyone, if something goes wrong take responsibility and if the project succeeds, credit your team. It had always been my golden rule. Don’t be afraid of failure and don’t expect anyone to fund you for your passion. You have to find a way out. Anything is possible.” Kashyap exhorted before answering to a brief Q/A session. According to him, India is one of the best countries to make movies easily.

Faizal, Bhikhu Mahrte, Kallu mama, perpendicular, and definite…the course of past decades has seen Kashyap give us some characters which even if we want can’t forget. And with many more beautiful movies in the pipeline, expect to be bamboozled even in the near future!
