10 Legends Of The Racing World

BENGALURU: Success in car racing doesn’t simply involve driving fast. It takes lightning-fast reflexes, endurance and a general disregard for personal safety to be great on the track. Then there are the ones who stand apart: the Legends. Excelling in intense, dangerous environments, caught between ferocious competitors and the limits of their machinery, they earned illustrious victories and records. Here are the 10 heroes who have carved their names into the tarmac of car racing history, reports Carophile.

MARIO ANDRETTI

If legend means mastering nearly all forms of auto racing, then Andretti easily qualifies. While most racecar drivers have had a hard time winning in one type of vehicle, Andretti aced it in both closed- and open-wheeled cars. He won the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500 and the Formula One World Championship. He is only one of the three drivers to win on dirt tracks, road courses and paved oval tracks all in the same year. Andretti had a long career in racing. He was the only person titled the United States Driver of the Year in three decades. In American culture, his name has become synonymous with speed, similar to that of the global recognition of F1 driver Michael Schumacher in the last two decades.
