Nuclear Weapons: Who Has What At a Glance


United States of America: The country that introduced nuclear missiles to the world.Atom Bomb on Japan The then U.S. collaborated with the United Kingdom and Canada in the Manhattan Project to develop the nuclear missiles. It was during the Second World War when U.S. began to compete with the Nazi Germany to be the first to develop a nuclear bomb.  It first test fired its nuclear weapon in 1945, in what was dubbed as “Trinity”. It then used the weapon twice against Japan.

In 1952, it tested the hydrogen bomb in “Ivy Mike,” before following it up with a deployable weapon in 1954’s “Castle Bravo.” It has the most number of active nuclear weapons at 2,150. The country’s nuclear warheads include tactical, strategic and non-deployed weapons.

United Kingdom: UK is the third country to test an independently developed nuclear warhead.   Hurricane was first warhead that was tested by UK in 1952. UK is one of the five signatories of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. U.S. and UK shared a special relation in nuclear security matters. This relation involved exchange of classified scientific data and even plutonium. A lot of resources and data required for their first warhead were taken from the Manhattan Project. UK’s objective behind nuclear development was meant to check Russia’s growth.
