Must Visit Indian Cities During Diwali

Asuravadha at Goa:

All around Goa, huge effigies of Narkasur dressed in colorful paper and armed with swords and other armaments are erected in the days preceding Diwali. This is a tradition found in many other cities as well. But Goa is a special case, as the focus here is on destruction of the legend demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna. These effigies are bounteous in all the streets. Tradition is to hold competitions in every village and city to see who can make the biggest and scariest effigy of the demon.

The Golden Amritsar:

Even though Amritsar, the land of the Sikhs, is famous for the golden temple, Diwali is celebrated grandly on par with the rest of the country. Diwali has been incorporated into the Sikh tradition and is particularly significant because it also marks the return from prison of the sixth Sikh guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib, in 1619, who was unjustly convicted. Also the very foundation for the Golden Temple was laid on the day of Diwali in 1577.

This architectural marvel that is surrounded by a countless number of oil lamps lit by devotees, and its bright reflection in the lake can take us to a different world. We can also expect some fireworks over the temple.
