Countries that are Most Vulnerable To Climate Change

Philippines:

A middle-income country in Southeast Asia consisting of over 7,000 islands, Philippines leads the list of nations most in danger of facing frequent and more intense storms. The country is also vulnerable to natural disasters like floods and cyclones.

Reports of torrential rains and cyclone had also hit the country before, causing widespread damage to crops and loss of millions of people. Over the past five years, it has witnessed many typhoons that have resulted in severe damage and losses. Some have even hit new areas like Mindanao that have not been affected historically.

The Typhoon Haiyan which occurred in November last year has left a trail of devastation across central Philippines, taking away the lives of over 6,000 people. The total damage and losses reached $12.9 billion, as per the Government estimates.

Nigeria:

Nigeria’s development is climate constrained. From rapidly expanding desert in the North to recurrent floods, erosion and ocean surge in the South, climatic change represents a present danger to Nigeria’s national interest.

With rivers drying up; erosion is causing an ecological emergency in the south-east; and the vast vestment along Victorial Island and Lekki Peninsula are under threat from rising sea levels.

Nigeria requires powerful coalitions to promote the development of policy instruments, enforcement and implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in order to stimulate change at individual, social, policy and corporate level.

On top of this, climate change might hinder Nigeria's important oil industry, which presently generates around 1.95 million barrels of crude oil per day.
