Target 2015: India's 8 Goals To Fulfill its Commitment To the UN

BENGALURU: Extreme poverty and deaths owing to hunger are the two devastating facts which still continue to persist in India till date. We all have grown up watching various summits and global meets come and go by. Yet there is no significant sign of poverty eradication at least when it comes to IndiaIndia. Colonial rule witnessed worst ever famine and draught which perplexed the world. That was however during the colonial period, but today’s exploitation in all cases is avoidable.

In 2000, the United Nations (UN) held a Millennium Summit, at which the membership adopted the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). India being a member nation is obliged to fulfill its commitment to the UN. India must take steps to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, says Subir Gokarn of rediff.com.

Listed below are 8 Goals set by India to succeed in its endeavor to eradicate utter disturbing challenges—

GOAL 1:

To Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger:

There are wide ranges of MDGs  which are set forth by India as targets to achieve by 2015. Notwithstanding its conceptual and measurement limitations in India, the most practical method is the poverty ratio to the percentage of people below the poverty line.

Therefore the target here is to half the poverty experienced between 1990 and 2015. The target is well within the reach as the year book clarifies it. However, the current focus so far is on food security and how best to achieve it, in terms of targeting, delivery and cost.
