Obama Visit: 6 Key Issues That Are Likely To Be Discussed

BENGALURU:  As the clock is ticking ahead of Obama’s grandeur visit there are several puzzles that need answers Indians need to be clear on America’s stand about India owing to the fact that we shared a bitter past with India/U.S especially during Indira Gandhi’s reign. Another big question is America’s stand with China, de-hyphenating India. There are few crucial areas that define whether U.S. is dear or fear to India. NDTV has pointed such areas.

First things first, India had a strategic topography that plays a crucial role since the Mughal rule. The tradition continues till date. On one hand, it isIndia's size, location, fast-growing economy and potential that are vital areas to consider and on the other hand the country is a democratic counterbalance to China. This is the fundamental reason which makes India an increasingly key element of U.S. military and commercial strategies. And what does India expect in return?—better ties with U.S. and greater cooperation on terrorism and access to high-technology goods for civilian and military use.

Secondly defence is the all time favorite area of discussion to both the nations. In the post cold war era U.S. overtook Russia as the biggest weapons supplier to India and India agrees to this statement. The country is the world's biggest importer of weapons and the United States is the biggest arms supplier. So the duo need each other’s help which calls for better cooperation. For this to happen, India needs to widely keep the gates open for the foreign companies without any ‘restrictions’ standing in the way. And U.S. on its part has to liberally decrease curbs on exporting certain technologies.
