India Among The 10 Largest Arms Importers In The World


Bangalore: In the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIRP) data for the largest arms importers in the world, many countries including the Asian states are seen beefing up their military arsenals with new weapons systems from countries like the U.S., UK and Russia. Modernizing its arm forces, these below mentioned countries have emerged as the world’s largest buyers of arms. 

United Kingdom:
The United Kingdom ranked 10th on the list of largest weapon buyers in the world. As per the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, there is an 18 percent increase in volume of imports. The U.S.A. is the biggest supplier of weapons to the UK accounting to 70 percent while only 27 percent to the European Union member states. Out of which, 41 percent of these weapons are missiles. The UK is now planning to supply surplus arms to countries in Central Asia and Afghanistan. This country is thought to maintain a stock of around 225 thermonuclear warheads, of which 160 are operational. Since 1998, the Trident programme has been the only operational nuclear weapons system in British service.
