Government Fights For Khadi Trademark

BENGALURU: Indian muslin, the finest form of fabric, is one of a kind and cannot be replaced by any other quality cotton. Khadi is the pride of the nation, which is a symbol of Indian culture and heritage. It deserves better recognition in the international front.KHADI Trademark Having been hit by trademark infringement in Europe, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) have moved to quickly register 'Khadi' as a 'word mark' to prevent further violation of products. KVIC has sought legal opinion to seek geographical indications that will give 'khadi' the same status as Darjeeling tea, Champagne and Kolhapuri Chappals, which will check the counterfeiting of a product that is intrinsic to India.

This move will not just prevent anyone else from using the 'khadi' trademark but even check the usage of prefix or suffix to the brand. KVIC has also sought protection for several other brands such as Sarvodaya, Khadi India and Khadi Bharat, while also registering various logos, as reported by Times of India.

Indian Trademark Office has already given an "identity number" to 'khadi'. However, KVIC is all set to file for an international trademark to protect its brand in the U.S., Canada, the European Union, the CIS countries and South America. TOI’s government sources told that "we are seeking trademarks in these regions as they are the major areas of export for KVIC."
