Sindhutai Sapkal: The Mother of Orphans
Sindhutai Sapkal’s was born on 14 November 1948 at Pimpri Meghe village in Wardha district Maharashtra. Being an unwanted child, she was nicknamed 'Chindhi' (torn piece of cloth) and followed by an abusive husband who abandoned her when she was nine months pregnant. For her baby girl she had to set aside the thought of suicide and started begging on railway platforms for food. In the process, she realized that there are so many children left by their parents; she adopted them and started begging to feed them. She decided to become a mother to the orphans. Sindhutai emerged stronger with every difficulty she faced and became a ‘mother’ to over 1400 homeless children when she herself was in a hand-to-mouth situation!
