Delhi, Mumbai Among World's Most Populated Cities

BANGALORE: The world's urban population is now close to 3.9 billion and is expected to reach 6.3 billion in 2050, according to the UN report. The rural population of the world has grown slowly since 1950 and is expected to reach its peak in a few years.

Director of the Population Division in the UN's Department of Economic and Social Affairs John Wilmoth said, "Managing urban areas has become one of the most important development challenges of the 21st century. Our success or failure in building sustainable cities will be a major factor in the success of the post-2015 UN development agenda."

Let’s have a look at the list of world's most populated cities as reported by the UN.

5. Beijing, China:

China’s capital city, Beijing is the center of government and also the most populous area. The city, with around 20 million city dwellers has the distinction of being the fifth most populated cities in the world.  It has a population density of 3,200 people per square mile.

The city has been in existence for over 3,000 years. It is a city rich in history and culture, and is surrounded by modern architectural wonders on all sides. The Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China, and the Olympic stadium are some of the wonders to be seen in Beijing.

The city also has a rich gastronomic culture, with places like the Wangfujing food street where cuisines from diverse Chinese provinces can be savored. Despite its many attractions, Beijing is considered relatively cheaper when it comes to living standards.
