9 Nations That Spend Most On Defence


BANGALORE: With the ongoing turmoil in various parts of the world, military budgets are only the gauge of military power. Keeping this in mind, let’s have a look at the nations that spend the most on defense as compiled by MSN.

United States of America:

National security threats have evolved over the past 5 decades, changing the scenario of U.S. commitments around the world. With a defense budget of over $600 billion allocated, it accounts for about 20 percent of all federal spending nearly as much as Social Security, or the combined spending for Medicare and as such, is the highest spenders on defense.

The recent invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan were largely funded through supplementary spending bills outside the federal budget.

The U.S. military as a unit has the state of the art equipments in large supply and also poses an extensive placement all over the world, making them major players. And this projects their strength and caliber on the military front.

People’s Republic of China:

At present, China is witnessing fast-growing defense budget mainly with an aim to dominate the entire globe. The defense budget for 2014 is $132 billion, which is a swift increase of 12.2 percent as compared to previous year.

It sets off a flurry of alarm among neighboring countries. They see the relentless growth in China’s military spending—double-digit increases almost every year for the past two decades.

China has developed and possesses weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and nuclear weapons. Till date this country is estimated to have about 140 warheads assigned to land-based missiles and 40 warheads assigned for aircraft. According to a publication by a Chinese government, the military budget of this country is about $188 billion, the second largest in the world after the U.S.
