7 Foreigners who Found India as their Second Home



Annie Besant:

Annie Besant, a British born, but was against the British colonial rule and supported the Irish and Indian self-rule. In 1890, Besant met the cofounder of the Theosophical Society, Helena Blavatsky through whom she learned about Theosophical Society. Subsequently, she became the prominent member of the society and travelled to India as part of the work. During her stay in India, she established a Theosophical Society headquartered in the Chennai city and joined the Indian National Congress to oppose the British rule in the country and launched the All India Home Rule League along with Lokmanya Tilak. Besant died in 1933, at age 85 in Madras Presidency, British India.

Tom Alter:

Tom Alter is an Indian television and a TV artist who also worked as a theatre artist, prior to his film career. Alter was born in Mussoorie to an American Christian missionaries of English and Scottish ancestry and though he was an English, he developed an obsession towards Bollywood movies. As said by him, Alter was inspired by Rajesh Kannaha and this is what he said when he was asked about his inspiration. "There was something very warm about Jagadhri. I remained a teacher there until the day I watched Rajesh Khanna romance Sharmila in Aaradhna. That was the beginning of my addiction to cinema."
