The time when the first piece of the International Space Station was launched in 1998 by a Russian rocket, after that, more pieces were added.

Two years later, the station was ready for people. The first crew arrived in October 2000.

People have lived on the space station ever since. With time passing by more pieces have been added and NASA and its partners around the world finished the space station in 2011.

Still the maintenance cost and other factors are adding up to the price. The International Space Station is estimated to be the most expensive thing ever built.

From 1985 to 2015, NASA contributed about $59 billion to the project. Russia has contributed around $12 billion, and the European Space Agency and Japan have contributed about $5 billion each. The space shuttle flights required to build the International Space station alone cost about $1.4 billion each.
