10 Lifesaving Heroes Who Saved Countless Number of Lives

#5.Stanislav Petrov

Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov is a retired lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Force. In 1983, Petrov was in charge of monitoring the Soviet Union’s satellites over the United States, and watching for any sign of unauthorized military action. Tensions were running high because of recent incidents when the Soviet Union had mistakenly shot down a Korean aircraft, killing 269 passengers, including an American Congressman, because the Russians believed it was a spy mission.

At that moment the satellites had detected the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a base in the United States. Then the system reported that five missiles had been launched and were heading toward the Soviet Union from the U.S. That night he decided that he would trust his gut feeling and declare it a false alarm based only on his belief that if the U.S did launch a nuclear attack, they wouldn’t have launched just 5 missiles. Petrov was later questioned strongly, and was not punished or rewarded
for being a key part of preventing nuclear war and saving the world.
