Bangalore:  Women are making a mark in all the walks of life and IT is no exception. Over the years, Indian IT industry has seen a boom in the rise of number of female employees who are taking hot-shot positions in their companies.

The global scenario is nothing different and the recent updates hint towards the same with Ursula Burns at Xerox, Ellen Kullman at DuPont., Ginni Rometty at IBM, And most famously, Marissa Mayer at Yahoo.

Though these trends are impressive what statistics suggests is that the path for women to occupy the top positions is still hazy.

The recent years have seen an increase of nearly 60 percent but unlike the west, Indian IT industry is still awaiting a woman taking up the lead position. Taking cue from the data there are a total of 6.7 million women who are currently working in the Indian IT and BPO industry but no matter how huge the numbers may look we are still lacking women who are holding top positions in IT companies.

According to a report published in computerworld.in, what needs to be done is introducing mentorship programs in the companies in order to understand the roadblocks that are hampering a woman’s path to advancement.
