Mario is the bestselling video game franchise of all time, with an estimated 200 million Mario games sold worldwide. It was the creation of Shigeru Miyamoto with the arcade Donkey Kong, released on July 9, 1981.The games have been developed by a variety of developers including Nintendo, Hudson Soft, and AlphaDream which has released over 200 games of various genres such as Super Mario, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mario Party, Mario RPG, Mario Kart and more.

The franchise also includes other forms of media including several television series and a feature film. Mario originally was known as Jumpman in a Japanese arcade game before being converted into a plumber in the U.S. In 2011, the Guinness Book of World Records named the original Mario the top video game character of all time as voted-on by more than 13,000 readers.

Seven of the songs on the album were Billboard top ten hits. 70 million copies of the album have been sold since its release in 1982.The Thriller album also sold 101,000 copies the week after Jackson’s death in 2009, and downloads of Jackson’s songs add up to2.3 million.
