The 10 Best Small Companies To Work For 2014

6. ENGEO

ENGEO Inc. is a civil engineering firm and has engineered a workplace culture defined by radically open communication, professional pride and a service ethic. The firm calls its managers “servant leaders,” and their doors are always open, in some offices there are no doors. Employees work hard on weighty projects like dams and regional transit expansion.

But they are compensated with company stock, lots of training options and the company of quirky, low-ego colleagues who enjoy circulating a rock as the company's prized award. ENGEO may not be the place for people who need lots of time in the spotlight—humility and collaboration is a priority here. One of the ENGO’s employee said: “I'm almost embarrassed to tell people how much I enjoy coming to work.”

7. Dixon Schwabl

Public relations agency Dixon Schwabl painted this motto on the wall: "We believe in discovering and developing the WOW in you and me.” According to the employees the firm lives out the slogan. The company operates with heart and with humor, providing expectant moms with "Whoa, Baby!" parking spots and unlimited maternity leave.

Staffers also view managers as savvy, saying they're sharp at both running the business and coordinating their talent. But 98 percent of current employees are wowed by Dixon Schwabl, deeming it altogether a great workplace. One employee there said, "the agency's 'family-like' environment makes everyone feel like they are a part of the team as a whole, no matter what position they hold.”
