Instagram was launched in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger when they were 27 and 24 years old respectively. Systrom had a passion for photography and he used to share it socially, with the idea of sharing pictures online he created an app called Burbn.

Burbn allowed users to share location-based photos and to improvise it. Further, Systrom went to his friend Krieger, who was at the time on a chat platform. The conjoined apps of Systrom and Krieger brought in Instagram, a new app that focused on photo sharing.

Systrom thought the idea to be Instant telegram which can be sent/ uploaded right away, so he named it Instagram.

In the first 24 hours around 25,000 people signed up for an account, which today has more than 300 million users.
