5 Bad Business Decisions in History

Microsoft too costly: Well like Google, Bill Gates in 1979, decided to sell Microsoft to EDS (Electronic Data Systems). The then CEO, Ross Perot in an interview with Seattle Times was quoted saying, “I consider it as one of the biggest business mistakes I ever made”. He was approached by Bill Gates with an offer to sell Microsoft for $2 million and he turned him down and now lives with the regret of having lost the chance to own a multinational company.

EDS was a $2 billion dollar company and Ross, the CEO felt that Bill’s charge was too much. Well Ross regrets not accepting the offer and has express that his satisfaction is not in all the money he made but to have a day- today contact with the Bill Gates and the team, watching them do their thing.

Mars Exiles ET: Remember the movie, ET? The movie on the extraterrestrial that landed on earth and becomes the boy’s best friend had a scene where the boy leads ET to his room using chocolates. Well the Amblin production team wanted to use M&M’s and asked the manufacturers, Mares, to advertise the movie in the wrappers of the chocolate.

Surprisingly Mars declined the offer. Hershey’s sub company Reeses Pieces, who later saw a growth in their sales that went up by 65 percent, grabbed the opportunity. This is a true tale of where one loses the other gains.
