# Indonesian Rupiah

The rupiah (Rp) is the official currency of Indonesia that is issued and controlled by the Bank of Indonesia. The name "rupiah" is derived from the Hindi word rupiyaa.

The current rupiah includes coins from 50 rupiah up to 1000 rupiah and from banknotes of 1000 rupiah up to 100,000 rupiah. Indonesia's Central Bank has announced that the rupiah would be redenominated by removing three zeros starting 2014.

The existing rupiah will be phased out by the end of 2018. During the transition period, the old and new currency notes will stay valid.
