George Soros: An Investment Prodigy


Early life

In 1947, Soros left Hungary and moved to England, where he attended the London School of Economics and completed his graduation in Bachelor of Science in 1952. During his college years, he worked as a railway porter and as a waiter to earn his pocket money. Later, he obtained an entry-level job with an investment bank in London. Then in 1956, he immigrated to the United States and took analyst and investment management positions at the New York firms of F.M. Mayer (1956-59), Wertheim (1959-63) and Arnhold & S. Bleichroeder (1963-73).

After having worked in a number leading companies in New York, in 1973, Soros went off and spearheaded his hedge fund company of Soros Fund Management, which eventually evolved into a well-known and respected Quantum Fund. His company acted as a primary adviser for the Quantum Group of Funds and mostly invested in public equity and fixed income markets worldwide, as well as foreign exchange, currency and commodity markets, and venture capital funds.  For almost two decades, his well managed hedge fund, reportedly generated returns in excess of 30 percent per year and, on two occasions, posting annual returns of more than 100 percent.
