The resident taxpayers also need to disclose the overseas assets in their tax returns. “Furnishing of return by such a resident would be mandatory irrespective of the fact whether the resident taxpayer has taxable income or not”, said Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, during the Budget session.
“The move to ask emigrant to furnish details of bank accounts and foreign assets is expected to cause hardship”, said Kuldip Kumar, Director of PricewaterhouseCoopers, as quoted by ET. These individuals will have to pay taxes in India as they are earning salaries here.
“We have done it to encourage people to go for e-filing of returns. This makes the entire process faster. However, digital signature is not mandatory for them”, a Finance Ministry official said to Rediff.
