Telecommuting Helps India's Top Professionals Reach The Global Job Market

As India’s information technology market continues to grow more and more local professionals start expanding their horizons and welcoming foreign career growth opportunities.

Countries from South Asia, including India, are stepping into a new era of recruitment and working philosophy. Technology is slowly but steadily erasing the geographical and demographic boundaries that until recently were preventing the local specialized workforce from developing into a more challenging job market.

According to Dr. Moorthy K. Uppaluri, an MD & CEO from Randstad India, "Today, an increasing number of organizations are viewing work as ‘something you do’, rather than ‘somewhere you go’ and there is a lot of focus to take work to the people as opposed to bringing the people to work.”. Dr. Uppaluri says this new trend will redefine the borders of employment and contracting allowing Indian professionals to taste the much-desired freedom of the foreign employment market.

Studies from the Randstad survey, one of India’s leading HR service providers, show that more than 50% of Indian respondents prefer telecommuting while the number of office-based employees sensibly starts to decrease. The prospect of higher income is motivating more and more professionals from India to seek a career that favors telecommuting. While the Indian population is already clocking in more than 45 hours per week, statistics show that professionals would willingly opt for a longer workweek if this guarantees a promotion or a higher pay rate. While the respondents’ desire for a flexible work week seem to be less of a motivation for telecommuting, the research shows that Indian professionals are actually craving opportunities for development, despite a possible decrease in free time or payment.

One of the main reasons that push the Indian professionals towards telecommuting is the ability to generate a higher income. More and more people who are driven by the telecommuting culture wish to adapt the freedom of working from home into building a new schedule that allows more time for freelancing. In this sense, remote workers from India who are employed on a part-time contract wish to fill their workdays with more work errands that guarantee a higher salary. And while this freedom may allow employees to engage in a higher number of professional activities, thus increasing the overall stress during a normal work week, employees are still managing to evade “workaholism” by putting their focus on family events and entertainment activities.

Yet, the biggest change for India employment industry seems to be the expanding reach of local professionals towards the global job market. While technology allows people to communicate from every point of the world, it also allows professionals to take advantage of worldwide job opportunities. The development of employment platforms, like Workfast, allow professionals from all across the globe to take advantage of on-demand job opportunities and work in a flexible environment on part-time contracts. This entirely changes the face of the local job market helping India strengthen connections with the global economy.

Today, India’s technological advancement allows employers to adopt a more flexible organizational system that favors telecommuting and freelancing. The desire for increasing efficiency in performance has lead Indian businesses to the idea of adopting a western-influenced management technique. One that sets clear rules, achievable goals and motivates through constant evaluation, employee appreciation and training. Having taken the road to telecommuting, India is opening its doors to an even greater revolution that the technological advancement that the country is already experiencing. A revolution of the mind that shifts cultural beliefs and transforms work philosophies into a motivational ground for personal and professional growth beyond the geographical boundaries. India’s workforce is openly welcoming an innovative ideology that’s about to change its economic core and push the country towards greater success on the global market.
