YouTube Announces Exit; Google Fools Around

Bangalore: For all those who did not fall for the YouTube collection DVD prank (YouTube delivering truck loads of DVDs) last year on the April fool’s day, should have been wary of a similar attempt by the video sharing website this year. But most of us fell for it.

In a highly dramatic move YouTube announced its exit from the World Wide Web. “We are so close to the end. Tonight at midnight, youtube.com will no longer be accepting entries. After eight amazing years, it is finally time to review everything that has been uploaded to our site and begin the process of selecting a winner,” said Tim Liston, named as “competition director” as stated by Livemint.

“It’s finally time to pick the winner,” announced the YouTube representatives in a 3:32 minute video posted on its homepage, late Sunday night.

According to Liston, “Distinguished” film critics, YouTube celebrities and some of the site’s “most prolific” commentators will be on the judge’s panel.

“We started YouTube in 2005 as a contest with a simple goal: to find the best video in the world,” reiterated YouTube CEO Salar Kamangar.

The video featured many YouTube stars from over the years, including Antoine Dodson, David Devore Jr. — the dazed post-dental appointment boy, Judson Laipply of “Evolution of Dance” fame and others. The world’s most popular video-sharing website was closing down at the end of the day. The message was simple and was delivered with believable sincerity.

YouTube bluffed its 1.5 billion users, about shutting shop for a decade to review all the video submissions it has received over the years, and would announce the best one in 2023. The message was delivered simply, was well received and as some would put it, “dropped like a thud “.
