How successful will be rural BPOs in India? There is no doubt they are more relevant now than ever. According to NASSCOM projections, India is likely to have around 1000 rural BPO centers with 150,000 employees by 2015. The Karnataka Government had recently announced a rural BPO scheme for providing financial benefits such as 20 lakh for capital training expenditure and 10,000 incentive per employee training. Many leading companies like Infosys and Wipro have deployed the Rural BPO model where the service providers operate in villages.

The next few years are crucial as many leading companies are likely to commit their resources to extract benefit from the rural BPOs. It would be interesting to see whether the rural BPO model is able to bring about a drastic change in India's rural economy. Who says that our villages are only known for their poverty, poor facilities and lack of infrastructure? If the rural BPOs have their say, Indian villages could become a new arena for business outsourcing in the country.
