Sony
Established in 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita as Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo or Tokly Telecommunications Research Institute, the company was renamed to Sony in 1958. The company chose the name "Sony" for the brand as a mix of two words. One was the Latin word "Sonus", which is the root of sonic and sound and the other was "Sonny", a familiar term used in 1950s in America to call a boy.
