Violence At Maruti's Manesar Plant: Plan To Disrupt Peace

What is the hullabaloo all about?

The whole event that happened on July 18 was the outcome of workers’ anger over the pay disparities. This feeling was already simmering for a long time within the firm. TUs have failed to protect workers against the delay in payment of wages and to rectify pay disparity between regular employees and those provided by contractors. The issue of pay disparity was discussed by the SC in its 2010 ruling in UP Land Development Corporation Case, which said, "To the vast majority of people , the equality clauses of the Constitution would mean nothing if they are unconcerned with the work they do and the pay they get. To them, the equality clauses will have some substance if equal work means equal pay."

However, Maruthi Suzuki has declared to continue to dispatch cars from the Manesar plant to dealers across the country, though it previously hinted the lockout of the factory. Maruti Suzuki India Chief Operating Officer, M. M. Singh said, "The dispatch operations won't be affected and will continue from Manesar." The Manesar stockyard is also delivers cars produced at the company's Gurgaon plant to various dealers across the country. Chairman Bhargava has said that the company will not be able to offset some of the lost production with imports or by increasing productivity at its other factory. Maruti has two plants in Haryana - one in Manesar and the other in Gurgaon. The plant where the riots took place produces 1,700 units of Swift, Dzire, A-Star and other models every day.

After the mayhem that shocked the Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar Plant, the auto industry seeks the intervention of the Prime Minister and also the Haryana government in resolving the issue. The local community has declared their solidarity with the company as a protest was staged by nearly 200 villages condemning the apparent arson and violence exhibited by Maruti Suzuki workers at the Manesar Plant.
