The survey also said that India’s increasingly Gen Next is turning to text and chat as an option over voice chat. 50 percent of those who surveyed in metros said that they used SMS the most to communicate and 38 percent of them used Facebook or Twitter, while 45 percent of them used instant messaging. But in Mini-metros, 62.27 percent make more voice calls to communicate. Tablet PCs and Tablets though growing have made its way far more intensively in Metros with 15 percent of the students listing it as their choice of device to access with and in Mini-metros, it was 7 percent.
The Gen Y students are now far more conscious than before regarding their future. They seem to be clear about what they would look for in a future job. IT remains the top career preference amongst youngsters surveyed across 12 cities followed by Engineering and Medical. Media and Entertainment is emerging as a clear urban favorite amongst these students, said the survey. In Bhubaneshwar 51 and 34 percent students preferred Engineering and Medicines as top career choices and only 3 percent seek government jobs.
The survey was undertaken from July to December 2011 during the nationwide TCS IT Wiz program to get a pulse of the digital habits of school students from grades 8-12 to capture the changing trends in youth across the nation with a focus on technology.
